spareI don’t know how anyone could look at the cover for Spare and Found Parts by Sarah Maria Griffin and not fall in love with it instantaneously. Everything about this cover is just so wonderful and despite the fact that I have no idea what the book is about at this current moment, I desperately want to own this book. And see, this is the thing about judging books by their covers because sometimes the covers truly do deserve tons and tons of praise. This is one that I’ve genuinely fallen in love with to the point that I am genuinely immensely jealous that I did not write a book deserving of such absolutely glorious artwork. From the cogs and random workings of tools that are scattered around the background, to the two characters on the front, I find myself intrigued and excited to learn more about this book. This, my friends, is a cover done right. And before I go to read the synopsis, I want to take a guess as to what this book will be about.

I’m fairly certain, just from the parts portion of the title, that this book is going to fall into some sort of steampunk category, with characters where at least one of them, if not more, is a machine of some sort. I love the way the characters are placed and how they stand out against that darker background. There’s something oddly pleasing about the man with a teapot for a head–not sure what that says about me, but there you go–and it’s obviously very brilliant to see her heart looking like machinery. I’m reminded of an animated video I watched some time ago that I fell in love with just by looking at this cover.

The text placement is fairly perfect, also, and where this is something I usually have some small complaint about, I find that I don’t have any issue whatsoever with the decision making here. If I were to change anything, the only one would be to have the characters themselves standing upright instead of sideways on the cover, but if truth be told I do understand why they made that artistic choice and it is nowhere near an immense bother, but rather more of a personal thought.

What do you think of this cover? Like it? Love it? Hate it? Are there things you would change or keep the same? Let me know in the comments!
