11573ABA-8F46-416D-AF73-157D2714F581This isn’t the first time I’ve read I Wrote This for You by pleasefindthis, or Iain S. Thomas. I fell in love with it a number of years ago, having bought the e-book rather quickly after I learned of its existence. The experience was emotional, the poems filling with me with all sorts of emotions that sent me on a bit of a whirlwind. It was beautiful, there was no question. And so, naturally, I had to buy a physical copy which has sat on my shelf since 2014 and every once in a while I pull it out and read through the feels, reeling in the poignant sadness that the poetry and matching photos bring out.

I’ve loved this book for a long time, so naturally, when I saw that it was being republished with “several” poems that have not been read before anywhere else and that it was available for review, there really wasn’t a single moment of hesitation. I wanted quite desperately to have a chance to read the new poetry, to delve back into the feelings that the book brings out. And I will say, the poems and the story they tell are just as hauntingly beautiful as they were the first time I read them. But much to my dismay, as I compared the copy I currently own and the arc I was reading…I only found one poem that was actually new.

And I guess I was just thrown, my resulting action to flip through every page in each copy—the arc and the one I own—in hopes that I was somehow wrong and that the initial index at the beginning listing the poems was simply…incorrect. But unfortunately, that was not the case. And so, it left me feeling somewhat cheated by the description, which cited “several new and exclusive poems that do not appear anywhere else,” something that is clearly either a lie or an immensely disappointing exaggeration. One new poem does not several make.

So unless I somehow got an incomplete copy…?

While I utterly adore this book, the poems, and the photography the only difference that this one has with the 2014 edition is the fact that the author’s name is finally included on the cover alongside his pseudonym please find this and that the first poem and photo in the book is actually new and unique. Considering this, I’ve come to the conclusion that, while the new poem is good and all, this book isn’t really worth buying unless you’re of a desire to have all the copies of his books or you haven’t read it before.

If you’re new to I Wrote This for You, I’d definitely suggest getting a copy, since it is a lovely collection of poetry. But if you already have a copy, one poem might not be worth it.

I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
